Who can post?

[edit]

Can anybody post in this forum? Even groups that are designated as terrorist organizations? Bahmanja (talk) 02:04, 1 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Bahmanja: Yes, but they have to be on topic. However, you are free to try to get them blocked if they violate some rule or other.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 02:12, 1 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Individual users cannot go through every post and flag them. Site admin can block particular names/domains/users that are not allowed to post. My thinking is that terrorist organizations are one of them. If they are, is there a way that users can pass the names to the admin? Bahmanja (talk) 02:25, 1 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Not talking about Antifa. This clip below is the reason for my question.

I would have to say: the person who made that video is either seriously ignorant of how Commons works, or pretending to be ignorant of how Commons works. Certainly 999real is not a flack for the Iranian regime. He is uploading available free-licensed material. If the government of Iran is making such material available, and no one else involved is doing so, that is not under our control.
Further: yes, Tasmin is banned by the English-language Wikipedia as a source for encyclopedia articles. That has literally nothing to do with whether they are allowed a source for photographs on Commons. About the only reason Commons bans a source is that they launder copyrights to the extent that we cannot trust the validity of any license they would issue. Even an organization where the bulk of what they put out is repugnant tracts that fall outside of our scope can still be a valid source for (for example) photos of their own leadership, or a meeting that they hosted. - Jmabel ! talk 21:50, 1 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
A devious photo from Tasnim.

Bahmanja, ah, okay. To summarize the clip, guy talks about searching Commons for Iran protests 2026 sorted by recency and finding only pictures from news agencies controlled by the Iranian government. He ends by saying "stunningly, Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons not only have done nothing about this, they don't even know it's going on"
Actually we do know. There's a simple reason for this: they release all their media with a free license. These are photos taken by professional photographers which we are generally happy to have when they are freely licensed and meet COM:SCOPE. So they get uploaded here. As of right now, his statement is no longer true as the most recent uploads right now come from Category:Photos from Vahid Online, Category:Photos from Mamlekate and a few others. But government sources could be the most recent again tomorrow.
Even I uploaded a few photos from Tasnim a few years ago. Doesn't mean anything. If those with Starlink access license their content freely, we'll be more than happy to host it. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 22:11, 1 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Alexis for clarification. I understand the logic behind this site now. But I still do not understand why a non Iranian, 999real who does not know any Iranian put up so many posts related to Iran. Maybe he has extra time on his hand and likes to post random pictures just for fun. Bahmanja (talk) 02:51, 3 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Bahmanja, that's quite possible you know.. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 07:20, 3 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

1st of all I am not Iranian and I don't speak Farsi and I never been in contact with anyone from Iran outside of Commons and I uploaded all those files with their original description because they show the claims that was made and tactics used by the government during these times which is important especially because of possibility of further internet censorship in Iran and I never claimed these images or descriptions are correct or tried to insert them in Wikipedia articles but apparently no one is able to think of these reasons REAL 💬 23:37, 1 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

What does it mean this work was created by me

[edit]

i took the picture only Bimshure (talk) 03:42, 3 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi there. When you take a photo, e.g., the one you took recently, publishing the image as your own work does not assert that you own copyright on the boat depicted.
When you take a photo of many types of outdoor, permanent thing in many countries, Freedom of Panorama applies. If it's art, that may or may not complicate it. EnjoyLightEnjoyTruth (talk) 00:59, 12 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
@EnjoyLightEnjoyTruth: I think that answer is more confusing than helpful.
@Bimshure: Assuming you are talking about uploading a photo with the Upload Wizard, there are two separate questions, neither one worded exactly that way. First, you choose "This work was created by me and anyone is free to use it." That means you took the photo. Then if you choose "This work was entirely created by me" it means that the photo does not show any copyrighted work created by someone else.
For what it's worth, the Upload Wizard does not do a great job of dealing with the issue of Freedom of Panorama that EnjoyLightEnjoyTruth mentions. If someone else's copyrighted work is alright to show based on Freedom of Panorama, you would do best to choose "Yes, the work is not protected by any copyright law," even though that is not strictly true. If relevant (I don't think it is needed for the particular photo cited by EnjoyLightEnjoyTruth), you can add a template from Category:FoP templates by hand after uploading; unfortunately, the Wizard does not walk you through this. - Jmabel ! talk 05:20, 12 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

can the photos contain nudity ? Briank1600 (talk) 01:01, 4 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Briank1600, Wikimedia Commons is not censored, so technically yes. We do have Category:Naturism for example. However, photos must be educationally usable. At least a part of the community is extra strict when it comes to nudity. Blurry dick pics absolutely won't fly. Also consider personality rights which are extra important when nudity is involved.
What are you looking to upload? - Alexis Jazz ping plz 01:48, 4 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Commons:Nudity § Significantly different from existing files says: "If a file depicts some phenomenon or circumstance which we do not already have representations of (for example, diseases or body modifications) then it should be kept, as it adds to the educational content of Commons." My name is Steven Christopher Seward. I am a professional portrait painter who has uploaded about 20 of my portraits of famous or noteworthy people onto Wikipedia biography pages of those people. I have also made a few modest text edits in biographies where I could substantiate information on the people featured.

/* Am I allowed to post pictures of myself WhiteslaveJames (talk) 01:42, 6 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Would a personal photograph of you have an educational purpose? Commons is not social media. COM:SCOPE has details on these matters. Abzeronow (talk) 01:46, 6 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Typically, no. (1) Copyright normally belongs to the photographer, so other than selfies, you'd need to demonstrate that you had properly acquired the copyright of the photos. (2) If you non-trivial activities on Commons or one our WMF sister projects, you are allowed a small number of (appropriately licensed) personal files for use on your own talk page, but otherwise personal files are out of scope. It looks like you have only a couple of edits, well below the (loose) threshold. (3) In the unlikely event that there is a Wikipedia article about you or something else that establishes significant notability, that would be a different matter. For example, we were very happy to have this selfie by author and translator Caraid O'Brien. - Jmabel ! talk 05:41, 6 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question about licensing for a news photo

Hello. I found a photo related to the tribute to Yeison Jiménez on the website Prensa Libre, credited to AFP [1]. I cannot locate the original on AFP's website. Could you advise if it is possible to upload this image to Commons under a free license, or if it is likely protected and uploading is not permitted? Thank you. letter from author

[edit]

Over 50 years ago I received a short letter from now deceased author Walter R Brooks, author of Freddy the pig books. It deserves posting on the Freddy the pig article but you are inquiring whether I have the right to do so. Also, how can I rotate it 90 degrees so it is easily read? Thanks! JohnRBrauer (talk) 14:48, 7 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

@JohnRBrauer: I see you've already uploaded before asking. Of course rotation to the correct angle is welcome (I'll take care of that), but it is certainly still copyrighted in the United States. According to the Hirtle chart, any currently unpublished work with a known author who has a known death date remains copyrighted for 70 years after that death date (and through the calendar year: works don't age out of U.S. copyright mid-year). So I will have to delete that for now, and it will be restored at the beginning of 2029. To undelete it any sooner, you'd need to track down Brooks's heirs and get a license from them (see COM:THIRD for more on this). Yes, in 2029 it would probably be a welcome addition to the article, but that is (or will be) for people at the English-language Wikipedia to decide. - Jmabel ! talk 20:10, 7 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

@JohnRBrauer: I'm younger (but not much younger, and devoured those books in third grade). Don't worry about the file, it is marked to be undeleted on 1 January 2029; at worst it would be a few days later if there is a large tranche to undelete. - Jmabel ! talk 05:17, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

@ScottWKillen: We restricted PDF uploads for new users due to the problematic files often uploaded by new users. To be able to upload a PDF file, you need to be autoconfirmed, which is granted automatically to accounts that are at least 4 days old. I recommend just simply waiting out those 4 days to be able to upload PDFs. HyperAnd [talk] 23:44, 7 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

If you want the technical details, see wikitech:Media_storage
To summarize: media files aren't grouped by category at the storage level at all. They're stored based on hash-based sharding, purely for performance reasons. The categories and other metadata you see on a filepage are to help humans keep things categorized, but they don't impact how the media files themselves are stored on the backend. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 07:32, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

How do I challenge speedy deletion of my file

[edit]

I received a warning message on my talk page saying that my file was tagged for deletion and demanded a proof that the author agreed to license the file under the given license, but I am the author. How do I rescue my file from deletion? And how do I challenge the speedy deletion? Super ninja2 (talk) 15:18, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Super ninja2: I suspect that TonySt tagged like that because you've written both "as illustrated by David Rohde" and "Author: Super ninja2". So one might ask whether David Rohde and Super ninja2 are the same person, and if not how much of the content of the file is by each of them. I think the "proper" way to contest this would be to edit the file description page to answer that question and then click "Challenge speedy deletion" to convert the speedy deletion request into a slower contested one. --bjh21 (talk) 15:30, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Uploading new files or overwriting

[edit]

Hi, for whether or not a file should be overwritten, I would like some clarification. Would you consider a significant improvement being the use of a high quality svg map compared to a more simplified svg map.

E.g. File:1880 US presidential election results map by county.svg

and File:1880 United States presidential election results map by county.svg

Illustriousdudeidk (talk) 03:10, 9 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Illustriousdudeidk, 100% upload as new file. The 1.16MB "simple" SVG can be considerably complex to render for a mobile or older device, but the 43.34MB SVG will make a desktop CPU chug. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 03:20, 9 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

I want to get rid of the white bar below this image, but of course it isn't my own and blocks me from doing so. Despite it being such a trivial change, the automated thing keeps flagging it as some sort of vandalism. I wonder why that's the case?

I created a preliminary map of the recent general election in Thailand. Basically, I filled in the winners of the respective constituencies. Nonetheless, I was wondering if it was even possible to do so, and what are the proper procedures of adding such files. The last thing I want to do is to do things incorrectly. Kindly let me know. Rogerjamesdsouza (talk) 01:27, 10 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Good morning, I'm selecting 50 images to print on posters for an educational exhibition at a shopping center for a 15-day period. I've entered the following information for each image. I'm asking if it's sufficient to protect my rights and if it's legally compliant with my work. Thank you for your reply. Here's an example of the information I'm entering: Chris Evert (Tennis Player) Photo: August 1990 - President George H.W. Bush plays tennis with Chris Evert at Camp David. License: PDM. Author: Tatiana, Moscow, Russia. Source:
translator: Machine translation - Alexis Jazz ping plz 09:32, 10 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
~2026-90171-7, you should consult with a lawyer if you wish to ensure you are in compliance with copyright laws. The requirements depend on the image and license. In case of File:Georges Bush & Chris Evert playing tennis at Camp David.jpg it is indicated on Commons to be public domain. If that is correct, no attribution of any kind is required. The page does not mention any "Tatiana".
For images with a different license (Creative Commons Attribution for example), the requirements are different. We could help you with proper attribution if you give us a list of the images you wish to put on display, but we cannot provide legal warranties of any kind. See also Commons:General disclaimer. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 09:53, 10 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
As mentioned above, you should really consult a legal professional in the country where you plan to display the images. In your question, you did not specify that country. The language of your question sort of suggests that it might be in Italy. In the example File:Georges Bush & Chris Evert playing tennis at Camp David.jpg, please note that the page here on Commons says that the image "is in the public domain in the United States". It is not in the public domain in most other countries. The government of the United States claims a copyright on this type of photo outside the United States in countries where there is a copyright. It might or might not be in the public domain in Italy depending if under the Italian law it can be considered a simple photograph without creative characteristics. Again, you should seek professional advice in the country of your exhibition. About the source, you may prefer to indicate this more simple url: https://catalog.archives.gov/id/545293828 which in addition to being shorter is also clearer about the origin of the photo, its context and its date. I am curious to know where the mention of "Tatiana", which seems unrelated to this image, comes from. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:07, 10 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Image upload on a Wiki-page

[edit]

How can I upload an image on a Wiki page and how do I know if it's fair use?? MusicBioContributor (talk) 13:06, 10 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

  • What do you mean by "Wiki"? There are many wikis, like Wikimedia Commons (this site) and Wikipedia (the encyclopedia). Please don't abbreviate such wikis to "Wiki" as it arises confusion to which wiki you are referring to.
  • If you mean that you want to upload an image to Wikimedia Commons so that you can use it on Wikipedia: We do not accept fair use. It also seems like you want to upload third party works, so I highly recommend reading COM:THIRD. From your Wikipedia edits, I can see that you're trying to make an article about a music album. You likely shouldn't upload such album covers as explained in COM:THIRD, because they are likely copyrighted and not in a free license.
    • There is a way to upload fair use files to English Wikipedia without Wikimedia Commons, but the criteria is very strict. See en:WP:NFCC. (Also, fair use files on English Wikipedia cannot be used on draft pages but on live articles.)

Help sorting out Estonian Air Force flags

[edit]

I noticed there is some mix-up with several images of the flags of the Estonian Air Force. Namely, images with "(reverse)" in the name actually contain the obverse (front side) of the flag, and vice versa. This has led to confusion and errors in articles, with some cases going by the name of the file and others by the contents.

In an attempt to fix this, I have uploaded the current, correct version of the obverse of the flag as File:Flag of the Estonian Air Force (obverse).png. I have also fixed the flag in a number of articles, mostly on enwiki, but several images still remain that are in use on various wikis:

(* Actually this appears to be a generic reverse used by a number of Estonian military flags, not specific to the Air Force.)

What would be the best way to sort these out, considering that most uses of all four files seem to be as the obverse of the flag?

  • Go through and edit each individual article? Seems a daunting task, especially since many are on wikis in languages and scripts I don't understand. Is there a bot for this?
  • Request (speedy?) deletion of the images and re-create as redirects to the correct image?
  • Directly change the images into redirects? Not sure if this is even possible.
  • Upload new versions to make the filenames match the image contents? AFAIK uploading duplicate images is not allowed.
  • Something else I'm not thinking of?

I appreciate any advice. Indrek (talk) 08:49, 12 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Indrek: the best course is probably to indicate here what filenames should be changed to what other filenames, even if it means that some names need to be swapped with each other. An admin can do the necessary moves, but if there are names to be swapped, no one else can. - Jmabel ! talk 18:09, 12 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Well, based on the contents of the files, I might suggest the following filename swaps:
But this would create the issue that articles using the "(reverse)" images to show the obverse of the flag would now show the reverse of the flag instead and require updating to use the correct image. In which case they might as well be edited to use the one I uploaded (which is higher-res and contains the current version of the flag).
Also, this would still leave files of multiple versions of the flag, and one image with the incorrect word "State" in the filename, which I would prefer to avoid. Indrek (talk) 19:51, 12 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Revisions (.png of naval message to USS Oklahoma City (SSN 723)

[edit]

I want to upload a .png of a naval message sent by Commander, Submarines, U. S. Atlantic Fleet, VADM George Emery, USN,to me (Commanding Officer, USS Oklahoma City (SSN 7123)) on 27 April 1995. The message is important to the submarine's participation in supporting the people of Oklahoma City following the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building the week before. I also have numbers of pictures taken by the crew and others on the waterfront which would help flesh out this historically important time. SoonerCO (talk) 20:59, 12 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hmm. Your descriptions sounds like being about an official USN document, made under the responsibility of a member of that service branch. That's within the purview of {{PD-USNavy}}. Furthermore, most military messages follow a strict, nearly algorithmic pattern, where there's no place for individual creativity, so they would be unprotected anyway.
But for pictures taken by crew members, you will have to differentiate between pictures taken as and during military duty and pictures taken as private mementos. The former are welcome (again: PD-USNavy), the latter need individual rights releases.
Last but not least: keep COM:SCOPE and COM:PERSONAL in mind, but that's only a small hurdle if you already have a use case on Wikipedia ready. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 21:24, 12 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Exactly. All things I'm interested in using to illustrate this history are the same: naval messages, memos, etc., and photos. SoonerCO (talk) 21:32, 12 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Is there any issue left? So, as long as any media was produced as official duty by a member of the armed forces of the USA, the it's in the public domain. If private mementos are to be included, then a rights release through COM:VRT is necessary, see COM:THIRD. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 22:08, 12 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
The only issue for me is the mechanics of uploading what I want to insert.
Oh, and apparently another: I just checked the USS Oklahoma City (SSN 723) wikipedia article and it has unexplainably reverted overnight to what it was before I revised it extensively. I am still in the process of compiling proper citations. Guess I'll just paste back in what I wrote. SoonerCO (talk) 14:50, 13 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
mechanics of uploading Special:UploadWizard is pretty self-explanatory; as noted, you will want to use {{PD-USNavy}} in lieu of a license, there's a place in the wizard sequence where you can fill that in. As for using some of the images in an article in en-wiki, probably the easiest way to see how to do that is to look at the source wikitext and see how other images are inserted (yes, there is documentation, but it's probably quicker to look at a model). - Jmabel ! talk 19:20, 13 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question about Publishing the Estate of Paintings of an Artist Friend, Charles Swank

[edit]

A good friend before he died this past October gave me as his agent and friend all his remaining paintings and photocopies of his lifetime of work. He told me they were mine to sell or give away or burn. I would like to publish some of the best ones here on Wikimedia Commons. His widow has confirmed his wishes to have me publish them. There is nothing in writing to prove this arrangement. It was made with a hug and a handshake.

Any guidance as to whether I can proceed here...? Charles Swank - Artist (talk) 22:51, 12 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Charles Swank - Artist: tell the widow to contact the Volunteer Response Team
If that doesn't work, I'm not confident about your probability of getting them onto Commons Whyiseverythingalreadyused (t · c · he/him) 06:07, 13 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Image in public domain?

[edit]

I found this image of Dan Helmer, which seems to be an Army photo and thus, as far as I understand, public domain, but the only source is his website. Not sure if it would still be allowed, or if there would be any way to find the original? (I've tried Google, reverse-image search.) Edit: same question for this photo of David Reid. JohnSon12a (talk) 00:34, 13 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi JohnSon12a. Just going to clarify that an army photo would only be {{PD-USGov-Army}} if it was taken by an employee of the US federal government (e.g., an official US army photographer) as part of their official duties; photos taken by third-parties (i.e., someone who's not an "employee" of the US Army) could still be eligible for copyright protection. The photo you've linked to above for Helmer does look rather official and like the ones taken of US Army members, but the source you've provided isn't really an official government source per se; so, it's kind of hard to say with 100% certainly that this photo is OK for Commons. If the source, for example, attributes the photo to the US Army or some other US governmental department, then that could really clear things up. Given that the photo seems to come from a site controlled by the subject themselves, you could try contacting them and asking where the photo came from, I guess. I can't see the Reid photo you also mentioned because of the PC I'm using at the moment, but what I posted above would, in principle, also apply to it. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:29, 13 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! I figured it would run into that tricky territory. I tried finding it elsewhere, but couldn't. I could try reaching out. JohnSon12a (talk) 01:33, 13 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Message re: Photo Upload

[edit]

Hi, I received a message that I need to verify with Commons that I have proper permission to upload a photo I uploaded. I do have permission. To verify, I can have the owner of the photo email Commons and say that she releases the photo under a free license. Would this satisfy the requirement to demonstrate permission? Thank you. ~2026-97827-1 (talk) 08:05, 13 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Use of figure from old journal article

[edit]

I would like to add the figure (i.e. plot) on Page 173 of this 1902 article (https://articles.adsabs.harvard.edu/pdf/1902PAIKH...1..125W) to the Coma Cluster page. Given the age of the publication, is it acceptable to reproduce the figure? Arobotham (talk) 09:47, 13 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

I would say so; Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Germany states that standard copyright persists for 70 years after lifelong protection, and the Max Wolf on the cover page appears to be this one, who died in 1932 (his postmortem copyright expired in 2002) Whyiseverythingalreadyused (t · c · he/him) 12:16, 13 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
(Slight inaccuracy, his copyright expired in the beginning of 2003. He would still have copyright until 31 December 2002, since copyright terms round up to a full year.) HyperAnd [talk] 12:42, 13 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
So {{PD-auto-expired|1932}}. - Jmabel ! talk 19:22, 13 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Going back to the old parser works, either via the sidebar or via the preferences. Or you can use a parameter in the url: replace &action=history with &useparsoid=0:

Rechecked, it does work for me. My settings cause a large width, perhaps ≥ 400px; and indeed, specifying 200px or 250px makes the content disappear → bertux 17:07, 14 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

My files were renamed as I uploaded

[edit]

I am confused, this has never happened to me before. I uploaded two large batches of files using the upload wizard. Hundreds of photos in each batch. The first batch worked as always, the filenames were the ones I had on my files. The second batch did this very weird thing where the files were all renamed. My filenames were for example raffi̙-kojiaɲ-AM2000-0500.jpg, but the uploaded file was named Raffi_kojian-AM2000-0999_01.jpg for some reason, and then from 01 the numbers just go up.

This is very annoying for me because I can no longer match them up with the files on my computer, the file descriptions I have on my computer that I want to slowly add over time, and I can never match them to my original files by filename. It's a mess for me and I am wondering if there is a way to automatically fix this, or just delete them all and I try again, because this is not a helpful situation whatsoever. Also of course any tips on what could have caused it that I can avoid would be lovely.

Thanks RaffiKojian (talk) 04:54, 15 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

@RaffiKojian: Is it that you can't reconstruct the original filenames and do this as a series of moves? Because that would certainly be preferred delete and re-upload. Also though, those are really poor filenames, not conforming at all to Commons:File naming. - Jmabel ! talk 07:02, 15 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

... oh no I don't have the time Whyiseverythingalreadyused (t · c · he/him) 09:00, 15 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
It would take so much more time to move hundreds of files than it would to just re-upload them. I would have uploaded tens of thousands more photos to commons by now if the entire process didn't take so long, and if I could get uploading software like vicuna or commonist to work on my computer again. It's really a waste just having these sitting on my hard drive instead of here on commons. RaffiKojian (talk) 14:53, 15 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Apparently all of my files were renamed in the last step of the process, and the only way I can see to stop it is to hand renumber/name thousands of files. I don't know why the site has decided to start renaming and renumbering files, but it's really annoying and pointless. It's already causing me problems finding specific photos I need to in order to add info to them, but I'm plowing ahead with uploading since I don't see a way around it...
